„Totally cruel with subtle hints of kindness”
„Today I went to the mall with my 2 best friends. We rushed inside the library, our favorite place, and we started THE SEARCH. The search for something good to read. I’ve picked 3 books, and then I sat down and drank my fruit infusion. In my ‘hunt’ for new styles, I’ve chosen to read Cristina Nemerovschi’s Nymphette_dark99. Surprisingly, this book opened my eyes, in a rather odd way. An adolescent female (13 years old Victoria) is hitchhiking at night from Brașov to Bucharest. Sex, violence, incest, coarse language, mocking everyone and everything. Totally dark with thin rays of light here and there. Totally cruel with subtle hints of kindness. Totally hopeless with dim and fuzzy anticipation of hope. As a linguistic bonus it’s a living encyclopedia of contemporary most coarse uncensored Romanian. It doesn’t look like that kind of book, that type that gives you a new perspective, right? Well, it honestly worked for me.
It got me thinking: Vicky is not a whore, despite other people’s impressions. Vicky is the result of a ruined society, where true values are not appreciated and people think about the same boring, useless things. This girl is like a beacon of light, shining in the darkness. She is different, and brave, and she isn’t afraid to show it by analyzing, criticizing, and treating the people around her the way that they deserve.”
